Tasty travel snacks are essential for road trips. They help keep hangries at bay, making road trip adventures more enjoyable. As road travelers, we don’t often stop for a nutritious lunch when we have a destination goal, which makes it even more important to travel with nutritious snacks.
Years ago, road trips meant we packed chips, sodas, Twinkies, Oreo cookies, Twizzlers and other sweet and savory holiday treats. This will not be enough if we want to stay healthy on the road. The goal is to replace our unhealthy snacks with more nutritious options that still taste great, fill us up, and don’t weigh down our waistlines.
I spoke with Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Rose Pacific about what makes a great road trip snack. As a nutrition expert, Pacific recommends filling your snack bag and cooler with plenty of healthy options to keep you satisfied along your route.
She suggests “include nutrient-dense snacks in your travel kitchen; they will help ensure you have the energy to enjoy your destination when you arrive. Look for foods that contain protein, fat, and/or fiber to help you stay full on the ride. Make packing your travel kitchen a group effort. Set parameters for acceptable foods and let all travelers choose some of their favorite healthy snacks.

Protein helps you stay full and satiated. Have protein-rich snacks like hard-boiled eggs, string cheese, jerky, and protein bars. Watch the sugar content of protein bars – some are little more than treats in disguise.

No-Bake Energy Balls
Combine:
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 2/3 cup shredded coconut
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1/2 cup ground flax seeds
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 3 tablespoons of honey
Mix all ingredients together. Cover and let cool 30 to 60 minutes in the refrigerator. Roll into 1 inch balls. Enjoy!

Pro Tip: Choose a cooler that’s the perfect size for the snacks you’re on the go. A full cooler will help keep the internal temperature low and your snacks will stay cold longer.
