Cult buy: Discover Balencagia’s new it-girl bag “Le Cagole”
Over the years, It-girls and It-bags have entered into a long-term relationship. There was Princess Diana and the Lady Dior, Mischa Barton and the Chloe Paddington, Carrie Bradshaw and the Fendi Baguette, Alexa Chung and the Mulberry Alexa – the list goes on. The thing is, it-girls make it-bags and vice versa, and that’s still true today. And, drum roll, there’s a new entry in the pantheon of accessories. World, meet Balenciaga’s Le Cagole.
Sound familiar? Inspired by the brand’s 2000s it-bag (h)It-bag – the city bag – the style was worn religiously by the likes of Kate Moss and the Olsen twins. The Cagole features some of the signature features of the iconic tote, from flat metal studs and grained leather to pom poms and buckles. But, and most importantly, it comes in a new, more refined form. Unlike its roomy, rectangular older sibling (recently relaunched as the Moto Bag), the brand’s latest iteration is crescent-shaped, smooth-cornered and decidedly smaller.
Offering a stealthy nod to the frivolous shoulder bag of the 2000s, it’s become the new cool-girl marker. Case in point: Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid, Alexa Demi and Julia Fox were all spotted holding the brand’s signature piece. Also, you can’t throw a rock without hitting a Demna-obsessed art student with a Cagole slung over his shoulder. In other words: cool kids are hungry for retro bags.
